How Dermal Fillers Deliver Youthful Results

Published on

Non-surgical dermal fillers are used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the face and to boost the appearance of volume in the cheeks and lips. Injectable treatments like Restylane and Juvéderm can create a more youthful look with minimal recovery time, due to their non-invasive nature.

Dr. Debra Johnson is affiliated with Ideal Plastic Surgery, where we have excellent nurse-injectors, working under Dr. Johnson’s supervision. Our nurses are well experienced in treating patients with dermal fillers. Here she discusses how fillers can deliver youthful results.

Juvéderm

Juvéderm relies on the active ingredient hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural carbohydrate molecule that can be found in all live cells. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant and has the unique ability to both attract and retain moisture.

Juvéderm products, like many other injectable dermal fillers, allow hyaluronic acid, along with other naturally occurring ingredients, to supply hydration to the outer layers of skin tissue. Juvéderm provides for youthful results by addressing signs of aging such as wrinkle lines and hollow facial areas, including:

  • Bags or dark circles dark undereye circles
  • Sunken cheeks
  • Marionette lines around the mouth
  • Bags or dark circles dark undereye circles
  • Nasolabial folds or laugh lines
  • Chin or lip wrinkles
  • Thin lips
  • Acne scarring

Restylane

Like Juvéderm, Restylane relies on the active ingredient hyaluronic acid, but it is more granular than Juvéderm (not as smooth). This means that Juvéderm is better at addressing fine lines and wrinkles while Restylane can stay in the place where it is injected. This is very effective in filling larger areas. Restylane can address moderate to severe wrinkles and signs of aging, including:

  • Lip lines or smile lines
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Sunken or flat cheeks
  • Chin wrinkles
  • Under-eye circles and bags
  • Chin wrinkles

Treatment Process and Recovery

Administration of dermal fillers is an office procedure that doesn’t take too much time to complete. Filler products are administered via a fine needle, so most patients experience little to no pain during the minimally invasive procedure. Some fillers contain numbing ingredients, and some providers may apply a numbing cream if patients request it.

There is no significant recovery time post-procedure. However, mild swelling and bruising may occur.

Since hyaluronic acid is biodegradable, results are not permanent. Patients may experience shorter or longer-lasting results based on their metabolism and the amount of filler used. Dermal fillers usually last between six and 24 months.

Are You a Candidate for Dermal Fillers?

Facial dermal fillers give the appearance of restored facial volume, reduction in the visibility of wrinkles fine lines, and can create a more symmetrical face through collagen production.

Dr. Johnson can help you determine whether dermal fillers can help you achieve your desires through a personalized consultation. Most interested patients are good candidates for dermal fillers. However, having realistic expectations, not smoking and being in good general health are qualifying factors.

Patients should understand that fillers are not a permanent solution and require repeat administration, depending on the type of filler and the area treated. Patients wanting more dramatic and longer-lasting results may want to consider plastic surgical treatments such as brow lift, facelift or eye lift.
