What Will Your Breasts Feel Like After Breast Augmentation?

Published on

Women who consult with board-certified Sacramento plastic surgeon Debra J. Johnson MD about breast augmentation tend to have many of the same questions. One of the most common queries is, “What will my breasts feel like after breast augmentation?”

This question can be answered in two parts: first, by explaining post-operative aftereffects, and then by addressing what to expect after the breasts have healed from surgery.

Sensory Changes During the Initial Recovery Phase

The surgery itself takes a physical toll on your body, and your breast skin, tissues and chest muscles need time to adjust to your new implants. Keep in mind that just because you experience initial changes in breast sensation right after surgery, it does not mean you will feel this way permanently.

Patients commonly describe sensations such as tightness or slight achiness in the chest area in the days and weeks following surgery. Post-operative swelling, breast firmness and changes in sensation are also normal and usually nothing to worry about. You may experience the occasional prickling or tingling as the nerve endings in your breasts repair themselves.

It may feel as though your implants sit unnaturally high on your chest or they appear asymmetrical at first. Don’t worry; within a few weeks, your implants should settle into a more natural position. Though each implant may settle at different speeds, they will eventually appear more even.

If you experience discomfort during your surgical recovery, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers or Dr. Johnson can prescribe pain medication. You will need to limit your physical activities, wear a soft bra and massage your implants to alleviate some of the discomfort.

Long-term Breast Sensation

After you have healed from surgery, allow several weeks to get used to the feel of your augmented breasts.

Factors such as the implant type/size you select, where your implants are placed and the amount of natural breast tissue you have will affect how natural your breasts will feel.
